Old Business:

Scholarship funds were discussed. Members agreed that all funds donated to “the can” should be part of the scholarship fund. Members also agreed to identify specific activities, such as raffles and auctions, as scholarship funds. It was also suggested that should the organization accumulate significant funds that some of those funds will be separated out into the scholarship fund.

The Scholarship Process will be reviewed at the next meeting. Some of the members would like additional clarification in the process.

The by laws were put off until the November meeting due to the lack of time. However, it was noted that the description of the Recording Secretary and the Corresponding Secretary are reversed.

Tamara Howard has requested assistance for an Equine Expo being held October 28th in Tenn. It was discussed and decided that copies of the black & white tri-fold brochure (describes the different sections of the breed) would be sent. Brochures will be sent along with a couple of SWA t-shirts. Anyone wishing to send individual farm brochures was encouraged to do so.

Elizabeth Benjamen has sent the SWA information about her handicap-riding program. It was discussed and decided that we would make a contribution. Bill Black agreed to contact Elizabeth and her feed supplier in an effort to establish a matching contribution with feed. This will be discussed again at the next meeting.

A clinic has been scheduled with Barbara Buccino for November 12th. The location of this clinic was discussed. Molly stated that it would be nice to have a clinic at Canterbury or some place that has a complete jump course. Molly was going to look into the cost of renting a ring at Canterbury or Full Partners Farm and email the information to the members.

October Show:

Mrs. Ables, cancelled at the last minute and was unable to judge the show. We were able to get Sabra Schiller to judge. Mrs. Schiller will stay at Bill Black’s apartment. Celia and Randall Evans will provide a car for her. And Sherry Pelzer will escort Mrs. Schiller from the airport to Dragon’s Lair where Bill Black will meet her and show her the way to his farm.

Bill Black brought in the ribbons for the show. Everyone agreed that they were what we wanted to use.

The following people volunteered to help at the October Show.

Ring Stewart: Sherry Pelzer and Lynn Starr

Ribbon Person: Jennifer Lender and Melissa Rodriguez.

Gate Person: Debra Hughes

Announcers: Robbie Hoskins, Lynn Starr and others as needed.

We also need jumps. Molly is going to look into getting jumps. We may be able to collect jumps from members or rent jumps.

The possibility of having a raffle during the show was discussed. We could have a 50/50 raffle as well as a raffle for donated items. There have been a number of items donated to the organization, such as a saddle pad donated by Joann Wilson and buckets donated for the June fun Show. These items will be raffled off at the October show. Items will also include two SWA t-shirts. The proceeds from this raffle will be used to off set the show expenses.

We will need 17 Championship trophies. The Tack Trunk has donated six of these trophies. Barbara Lender donated additional new plaques. Mike Smith will get the nameplates and glass for the plaques. Various members are donating trophies for the open classes.

Next Meeting:

The next meeting will be held at Dragon’s Lair, November 12th at 12:30 p.m.

With no further business the meeting was adjourned at 1:40 p.m.

October Clinic: The October 8th, Carol Ogden clinic was a great success. There were three group lessons in the morning and a cross-country training session in the afternoon. The net cost to the SWA was $30, with SWA youth participating for free. Adults and non-members paid $20 each.

Barn News

Lynda Gillen-Smith did a great job of representing SWA at the Tulsa WPCSA American Nationals. Glenhaven Welsh Atlanta, a four year old Welsh Cob mare won first place honors in the Open English Pleasure Futurity Class of 16 entries.

Glenhaven Welsh Margarita returned home with the title of American National

Champion Western Pleasure Cob and also repeated that win in the Fall Festival Show immediately following the Nationals Show.

Both mares are owned by Mike Smith and Lynda Gillen-Smith of Newberry, FL and were trained and shown by Lynda. Lynda also trained and rode the 1995 American National Western

Cob winner, Powys Valley Tamara for Glenhaven Welsh Ponies and Cobs.

Congratulations Lynda!!

We are looking forward to seeing all the SWA members at the Florida State Fair driving and Welsh shows next February.

Please submit all barn news to cerand@worldnet.att.net

Note From the President

I would like to thank all of our members who put in the extra effort to help with the October show. For those of you who could not attend the October show went well. After getting off to a rough start and some of the planned events falling by the wayside, we pulled it off.

The show results are listed on our web page, thanks to Mike Smith, along with pictures of some of the winning ponies.

The next Welsh show is scheduled for February in Tampa at the Florida State Fair. Please mark your calendars. We all need to show our support, if we want the show to be an annual event.

The SWA’s next show will be in April. We are in the process of locating a facility and putting together a proposed class list.
